They have defended their island against explorers, fishermen, helicopters, and even rescue teams. Their language remains unknown, their customs a mystery, and their way of life has survived with almost no influence from the outside world.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo one knows exactly how long they have lived there.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany anthropologists believe their ancestors may have reached the Island tens of thousands of years ago, making them descendants of some of the earliest humans to migrate out of Africa.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHistory offers only brief and unsettling glimpses into their world.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the late 1800s, British colonial officer Maurice Vidal Portman landed on the island with an armed party. He captured several islanders and transported them away. The elderly captives quickly became ill and died, while the younger survivors were actually returned. The consequences of that encounter remain unknown, but it may have deepened the Sentinelese people's distrust of outsiders forever.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the decades that followed, nearly every attempt to establish peaceful contact failed.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome visiting groups left gifts such as coconuts and metal tools, hoping to build trust. Occasionally the gifts were accepted.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore often, they were met with arrows.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven after the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, when many feared the island had been destroyed, an Indian government helicopter flew overhead to check for survivors.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA lone Sentinelese man stepped out of the trees...\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e...and fired an arrow at the aircraft.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe island had survived.
