One lonely road. One abandoned car. Then… nothing.

On the evening of February 9, 2004, winter had already swallowed the mountains of New Hampshire. Snow lined the roads. The forests stood silent of Route 112, a black Saturn sedan suddenly veered off the road and crashed into a snowbank.
It wasn’t a violent collision. The driver survived.

Within minutes, a local school bus driver stopped to offer his help, but the young woman behind the wheel declined, insisting that she had already called roadside assistance.
The bus driver knew that there was no cell service in that area, but he didn’t argue, instead he drove home which was only a short distance away and called police instead.

Police arrived at the scene roughly about ten minutes later, the Saturn was still there.
But the young woman had disappeared.
Her name was Maura Murray.
She has never been seen again.

A Normal Student… Until Everything Changed
Twenty one year old Maura Murray was a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her friends described her as intelligent, athelitic, and also very quiet. She competed in track, maintained good grades, and appeared to be building a promising future.
Yet during the week before she vanished, small cracks had begun to appear.
She became visibly emotional while working a campus

security shift, though no one could determine exactly why. A few days later, she was involved in a minor car accident after attending a party.
Then , on February 9, she emailed professors saying there had been a death in her family and she would be away for a week.
There had been no death.
She packed some clothing, withdrew nearly all the money from her bank account, purchased alcohol, and left Amherst alone.
No one knew exactly where she was going or what her intentions were.
Late in the evening of the day of the crash, Maura’s Saturn crashed on Route 112 near the village of Woodsville.
Several nearby residents either saw the accident or noticed activity around the vehicle.
The school bus driver, who personally spoke with Maura, later told investigators she appeared shaken but not seriously injured. He told investigators that he repeatedly offered assistance but the young lady did firmly refused every time.
It was the last confirmed conversation anyone ever had with her.
When police arrived soon after, the car was locked, and Maura was gone.
She had left behind many of her belongings. And police did not have to work with as surprisingly few clues outside of the vehicle.
There were no obvious footprints leading deep into the snow that clearly identified where she had gone. The search dogs later followed her scent for only a short distance before it abruptly ended near the roadway, which lead investigators to wonder whether she entered another vehicle or whether the scent trail had simply become too degraded to continue.
The darkness had sallowed every answer.
Authorities launched one of the largest missing person searches in New Hampshire history.
State police, Local officers, Search and rescue teams,Tracking dogs, Helicopters, and Volunteers.
They combed forests, rivers, abandoned buildings, and miles of rugged wilderness.
Nothing.
Months turned into years.
How does someone disappear within minutes on a quiet road with nearby homes and responding police officers only moments away?
I guess we will never know, some secrets will stay hidden, no matter how much we dig for answers.
